Film: Crossing the Outback

North American premiere

Director: Justin Jones
Origin: Australia
Duration: 48 minutes

Crossing the Outback is a feature length documentary film about a couple searching for something quite different; looking for answers in the most unlikely place.

Gripped by the urge to re-imagine parenthood and settle down differently. Justin Jones, world class professional adventurer and Lauren Jones, corporate high flyer, embarked on an outback odyssey with their one-year old daughter Morgan (literally) in tow.

The young family left the comfort of their urban lifestyle to walk 1800km unassisted across the Australian outback, a sacred, yet unforgiving terrain, to reclaim their sense of discovery, of wildness, of connection, of adventure in a modern world.

This film was primarily directed, shot and funded by the two (and occasionally three) people on the trail. We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land that lived on, walked and traversed. And we honor and recognize the traditional Australian elders, past, present and future.

Film: Crossing the Ice

Winner of 15 International Film Awards, James Castrission and Justin Jones, dare to not only tackle the perilous journey across Antarctica to the South Pole. And they do it completely unassisted – no sled dogs, no wind kites, just two men dragging their food, their shelter and themselves across 1140 kilometres of barren ice. And back again. As they battle frostbite, hypothermia, crevasses and starvation over three months of torture in the harshest place on earth, Cas and Jonesy discover their limits, the nature of sportsmanship and the boundaries of the human spirit.

Directed by Oscar winning George Miller, this is a story of two young Australians, James Castrission and Justin Jones, who took on the Tasman and conquered it. The Tasman Sea is one of the world’s deadliest and most treacherous oceans, spanning 2200 kilometres between Australia and New Zealand. In their tiny kayak, they battled ten meter towering waves, massive storms, sharks and currents that conspired against them.

Justin Jones Virtual Presentation

vimff Justin Jones speaker presentation

Sharks, Blizzards & Dirty Diapers: the Evolution of Adventure

In this personal, no holds barred and hilarious presentation, Jonesy will let you into the untold stories behind the documentaries of his record setting expeditions. The first kayak expedition across the Tasman Sea, the longest unsupported, unassisted polar journey of all time and a 102 day trek across the treacherous outback with a one year old baby.

He’ll dive into the impact of these journeys on the family and friends left behind, share some of the life altering moments, distil the lessons learnt, and answer why the hell would you want to take a teething toddler on an outback odyssey. It’s the stuff too outrageous, too unbelievable, too ridiculous to be told on film. Fueled by FOMO, a healthy dose of ADHD and a ton of gumption, Jonesy proves that even the most average of us can achieve some seriously hectic feats.
