Lynne Quarmby is a cell biologist and professor of molecular biology & biochemistry at Simon Fraser University. Her research explores the molecular machines that serve as cellular antennae, receiving and processing signals from the world outside the cell. Lynne is fascinated by life and thrilled that some of her group’s discoveries have helped us understand diseases as diverse as Polycystic Kidney Disease and Cancer. Concern for climate change lead Lynne to establish a new research program to study the algae that live on snow and ice, the most rapidly changing ecosystem on Earth. Lynne's climate justice activism has had consequences: she's been sued, arrested and she ran for the Green Party. Lynne finds solace in facing the realities of climate change. From truth we can move through despair to action.

Lynne will speak to the struggles of sustained and effective individual engagement. Climate change will define our lives and our current political environment is daunting. How do we stay positive? Where should we put our efforts?
