Anne Keller

Mountain Biker & Photographer

Originally hailing from the eternally damp Pacific Northwest, Anne Keller made her way to the desert Southwest some 25 years ago. She now resides in Fruita, Colorado, a town best known for some weird, carny type stuff like a festival for a chicken with its head cut off. Also there’s some mountain biking there. Keller admittedly feels much better about life now that February includes sunshine, but damn that dry desert air is causing some serious wrinkles lately.

A longtime contributing photographer for Bike magazine, Keller took a pause from photos to follow some blissful ignorance telling her that opening a pizzeria was a good idea. It was, actually. After co-founding and operating The Hot Tomato for 15 years, Keller is now post-pizza, turning her attention back to photography and video pursuits, and enjoying a career that doesn’t involve smelling like garlic every night. Her work can be found in publications such as Freehub magazine, and for clients such as Patagonia, Juliana bicycles, Liv cycling and Yeti. An avid mountain biker, her favorite rides are the ones trending towards disaster, but not quite crossing over that tipping point. She loves monstrous thunderstorms, broken derailleurs, bear sightings, and grueling hike-a-bikes, anything really that makes for good fodder afterwards over a nice, cold N/A beer.

Echoes of the Backcountry

Anne Keller and Elladee Brown retrace the backcountry routes of Alice Jowett, a respected hotelier and miner from the late 1800s. A trailblazer in a male-dominated era, Jowett owned and operated the renowned Windsor Hotel in Trout Lake, British Columbia. She established routes to her mining claims while navigating the harsh mountainous terrain well into her 80’s. Nearly a century later, a group of friends embark on a parallel journey, using modern technology to explore and connect the unknown and unmarked trails once traveled by the “Grand Old Lady of the Lardeau.”
