The VIMFF gratefully acknowledges the dedication of the Board of Directors. These individuals are leaders in the professional and outdoor community. They are a dedicated group who are passionate advocates of the vision for the VIMFF and work hard to achieve it's strategic goals.

Position: Board Chair
Profession: Information Services Consultant
Years on BOD: 2015-present

Manrico is an avid hiker, skier, and climber starting over 60 years ago on Mt. Seymour. He is a former President of the Federation of Mountain Clubs of BC and has held several executive positions with the Alpine Club of Canada at national and local Vancouver levels. Manrico is a highly experienced independent business consultant. He helps organizations plan for and implement large scale information systems. Profession: M.Ed, Manager, International Research Mobility @ SFU
Years on BOD: 2019-present

Zhaoying hails from Beijing China and has been calling Vancouver home since 2014. She came to the Vancouver International Film Festival propelled by her passion for rock climbing and films. An unwavering sense of curiosity and appreciation towards cultures drives Zhaoying to become an international education professional, the President of the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra, and the organizer of Vancouver Foreign Film Society’s monthly film screening. Zhaoying can often be found sailing in English Bay or climbing in Skaha Bluffs – taking full advantage of what British Columbia has to offer.

Years on BOD: 2008-present

Alix grew up and has lived on the North Shore her entire life. She loves the mountains for hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter. Her passion for the outdoors has lead her to support VIMFF for many years. “The films and people continue to inspire me.” As a Chartered Professional Accountant, she has enjoyed being on the VIMFF board as treasurer for over 10 years. “The extraordinary travel and pursuits highlighted at the annual festivals takes me to new adventures, I look forward to continuing to share.”

Andrew’s passion for climbing has taken him around the world. He is focused on growing the climbing community as an ACMG course examiner, fostering the next generation of climbing instructors and coaches. Professionally, Andrew has worked in managing, developing and sourcing equipment for the outdoor industry for over a decade, ensuring outdoor enthusiast are using the best gear on their adventures.

Profession: Account Executive – Strategic Expansion

Dan Fine is one of the early Internet veterans has founded multiple successful businesses using well-developed strategic plans. He founded fine.com, the first company to be named a “dot com” in 1994 without angel or venture capital funding. Dan guided the company thru an IPO on NASDAQ and to an acquisition by Aris Corporation in 1999. He continued as VP of Global Marketing at Aris before co-founding Bot, Inc. where, as the CEO, Dan raised a seed round. In September 2002, Dan co-founded In2Gr8 Corporation with a mission to become the leading Microsoft Business Solutions company. The company raised $22 million from four Venture Capitalists and merged the company with EYT, formerly Ernst & Young Technologies.

Dan then launched Fine Solutions. The company is focused on delivering Microsoft Dynamics ERP and CRM. He grew it to $12.25m in revenue with 50 employees and 550 clients. The company achieved 9 out of 10 years in a row on Inc.’s Fastest Growing Companies. Only 21 other companies in the USA have accomplished this recognition. He was also on the Dean’s council at Washington State University and serves as an advisor to the Provost of the University of Washington. In addition, Dan was on the Board of Director’s of Who’s Calling and Tamarac. Both were sold for over $60 million.

Dan has received several awards for his solid business planning, including Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award, and Small Business Person of the Year Award by SBA. Dan graduated from Washington State University with a BA in English, and lives in Vancouver, BC. He is married and has two girls.

Profession: DEI activist and Founder of Colour the Trails
Years on BOD: 2020-present

Through adventures and travel, Judith highlights her experience as a black woman that skis, hikes, camps, climbs, and explores. A former refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo, she was raised in South Africa, Australia, The United States and Canada. Judith’s unique upbringing allows her to draw from diverse experiences and cultures. Judith’s active participation in the outdoors brings to light the importance of representation. Through conversation and grace her work draws attentions to underrepresented minorities by changing the narrative that people of colour are not active participants in the outdoors. Judith is the fellow at the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. She is the founder of Colour the Trails, a community group that focuses on getting Black, Indigenous and People of Colour out in nature. Judith believes nature is for everyone.

Profession: Talent Mentor, Architect, Keynote speaker, Expedition leader

Kevin is an avid outdoor enthusiast living in North Vancouver. He is a talent mentor, architect and explorer. He is a member of the Explorer’s Club and was honoured as an Explorer’s Club Flag recipient for his expedition to the Northwest Passage in 2013. In 2009, he and two teammates broke the world record for the fastest unsupported trek to the Geographic South Pole. www.kevinvallely.com

Profession: Director Organizational Development at BCIT

Lisa is currently the Director Organizational Development at BCIT in Burnaby, BC. She has nearly 30 years experience in Human Resources from Royal Bank, BC Gas, Best Buy Canada, MICA Consulting, Right Management, and Ritchie Bro’s Auctioneers.  Previously the HR chair for Pearson College board and President of the BC OD Network, she is passionate about good governance and engaging workplaces. Lisa is a Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP), Certified Professional Coach (PCC), Senior Certified OD Professional (SCOD) with a Bachelors in Economics and Masters in Business from UBC. She lives on the North Shore since 1997 with my husband, two kids and a dog.  We are avid hikers, bikers, runners, and skiers that love the mountains and mountain culture.

Marcos is a Business Development Manager and Entrepreneur with a passion for the outdoors. After 15 years working on a company he founded and managed in Brazil, he decided to move with his family to Canada in 2017 to explore new experiences. Before joining the VIMFF Board of Directors, he was an avid enthusiast of the festival and the mountains of British Columbia. Having extensive experience background in both mountaineering and rock climbing in the Andes, Alps and Himalayan Mountain ranges, Marcos hopes to contribute to VIMFF so it keeps inspiring more people to enjoy the outdoors.

Profession: Founder, Writer and Producer of MyMM. Inc. a content production studio
Years on BOD: 2020-present

Markella grew up in the prairies and in 2008 relocated to BC where she instantly fell in love with the vast landscapes. With a diverse background in Journalism, Marketing and Producing, she founded MyMM.Inc a content production studio where she leads creative projects for various brands, whether in video production or creating written content. Her background in marketing has allowed her to touch many industries over the years and she finds great pleasure in building these relationships and opportunities. When not immersed in her work, she attempts to get outside as much as possible and is always willing to try new things. She loves any opportunity to explore and adventure through the mountains and will jump at the chance to get out to remote places. Markella’s personal motto is to “inspire the human spirit and nurture curiosity.”

Stefan is an experienced professional in the Canadian film and television space. He has worked in business affairs and project management at large entertainment companies, startup marketing firms and commercial production studios.  A relatively new resident of Vancouver’s North Shore he is an avid skier and backcountry enthusiast.

Profession: Ret. Senior Vancouver City Planner

Tom is a retired Senior Vancouver City Planner (Convention Centre, VGH Fraser Lands, etc.) with a passion for hiking, scrambling, trekking, skate and telemark skiing plus some cycling and paddling. Extending 58 years of North Shore hiking to many western and European ranges (Alps. Dolimiti, Sierra Nevada) and 5300+m treks and work in Pakistan, Ladakh and Tajikistan, Tom has an appreciation of a varied array of Pamiri, Karakorum and Himalayan cultures and geographic experiences. Experience in community and civic roles (Polygon Gallery, Planning Commission, PCRS) combine to bring a broad set of contacts and perspectives to bear on VIMFF opportunities.

Viera brings to VIMFF’s Board of Directors more than 20 years of experience as environmental advisor. She is a practitioner and advocate of sustainable living and has been instrumental in creating sustainable strategies and initiatives in private and public sector. Her love for the natural word and enthusiasm for outdoor activities and adventures aligns with the VIMFF mission to celebrate and embrace mountain film and culture, outdoor sports and environmental initiatives. She has been a dedicated volunteer since VIMFF’s inception and has not missed a festival to date.
