Don Bowie

Canadian Mountaineer, Adventurer, Filmmaker

Don Bowie is a Canadian high-altitude mountaineer, writer, and filmmaker. A veteran of more than twenty Himalayan expeditions, Bowie has summited some of the world’s most formidable peaks, including K2, Annapurna, Gasherbrum I, and Cho Oyu, without guides or supplemental oxygen. Known for his independent approach to mountaineering, he has appeared in and filmed portions of international productions including Netflix’s 14 Peaks: Nothing is Impossible and Race to the Summit, and the Spanish documentary Pura Vida. He is a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and a recipient of the Spirit of Mountaineering Commendation, presented at the Piolets d’Or.

The Question of Why: Risk, Obsession, and Summit Ambition

Through remarkable imagery and stories ranging from absurdly humorous to profoundly heartbreaking, Don Bowie draws on more than twenty Himalayan expeditions as he grapples with loss, identity, and ambition, and how time has changed his understanding of what drew him to the mountains in the first place.
