Award-winning filmmaker Heather Mosher explores purpose, burnout, and sustainable motivation in documentary storytelling.
Humans are natural-born storytellers, so it makes sense that we would be compelled to tell stories and create documentaries – but let’s face it, this line of work is hard. Precarious work, long days, little pay, endless labour, and on top of that, we’re often telling stories which carry deep personal meaning for us – a perfect recipe for burnout.
In this one-hour, interactive workshop, we will explore purpose and motivation in documentary filmmaking: what exactly compels you to do this work? How do you know what work to pursue, and when it’s time to put a project down and walk away? And finally, how can we create work that is both fulfilling and sustainable, to allow for greater longevity in this deeply challenging but ideally, ultimately fulfilling creative career path?
