Matt Ruta is a Golden, British Columbia–based ski mountaineer and endurance athlete driven by steep lines, long climbs, and human-powered adventure. Raised in the Canadian Rockies, Matt grew up moving through the mountains on foot and skis, developing an instinctive connection to terrain that now fuels both his big-mountain pursuits and his competitive edge.
Equally comfortable chasing first descents in remote alpine environments or grinding out vertical in skimo races, Matt represents a new generation of mountain athletes blurring the line between exploration and performance. He currently trains with the Canadian national skimo team as the sport prepares for its Olympic debut at the 2026 Winter Games.
In the off-season, Matt shifts seamlessly to trail running and climbing, approaching the mountains as a year-round arena for movement, curiosity, and growth. Whether racing uphill or navigating complex terrain far from the trailhead, his focus remains the same: show up prepared, move efficiently, and earn every turn.
For ski and snowboard mountaineers Christopher Logan and Matt Ruta, the mountains aren’t about summits, they’re about the line. From committing ski descents in the Canadian Rockies to wind-scoured faces and towering spines in Patagonia, their partnership has been forged by long approaches, human-powered ascents, and steep terrain where mistakes are not easily forgiven. This is a journey defined by calculated risk, hard lessons, and relentless effort. Join them for a raw, honest conversation, backed by striking photos and films, about commitment, consequence, and the reward of dropping in where few ever do.
