Homecoming: after 15 years, Ivan Hughes returns to his role of Program Director, offering mentorship to emerging filmmakers

VIMFF programming director Ivan Hughes x

“Make it as long as it needs to be good.”

The wise words of Ivan Hughes, who frequently offers this simple guidance to folks submitting their work for our festivals. As the Program Director, he selects all the films for the VIMFF, curating each show into a careful and impactful festival collection. Needless to say, he’s seen more than his share of adventure films.

His wisdom is born of personal experience. Hitting the scene in 2004, his breakout film In the Shadow of the Chief won Best Film at the VIMFF. A year later, Ivan joined the VIMFF team as Program Director for the first time, a position he held for 5 years before moving on to co-found Compass Media which has produced a large body of award-winning work.

A Toronto film student turned Vancouver rock climber, the VIMFF acted as a catalyst to his early career. He frequented the festivals and connected with the filmmaking community. It provided a space to bring climbing adventure stories to screen and launched what has become a decorated career in adventure documentaries. He’s worked with greats like Barry Blanchard and Sonnie Trotter, filmed in Nepal, Belize and the Canadian Arctic, and produced a diverse body of work for film and broadcast.

Now, with more than 20 years of filmmaking under his belt, he’s once again returned to his role as Program Director. This time around, he relishes the chance to provide mentorship to emerging artists, something that can be tough to access in this industry.

“In my role, one of the most rewarding things has been when those filmmakers that have had their films rejected, get in touch afterwards and ask, ‘Can you give me some feedback?’”

After his years of experience, he says rejection is one of the toughest parts of being a filmmaker. He approaches his role with compassion and generosity, offering insights on how to craft a compelling story and creative meaningful work.

“You want films that have an impact on an audience. There has to be some sort of evolution of the character…people really want to be taken to worlds that they don’t normally go to themselves. They want to be excited, entertained, enlightened. They want to learn something.”

Ivan’s expertise is not only elevating the VIMFF programming, but the standard of work for emerging artists. Currently, he is busy preparing the 2024 Fall Series, running in-person November 12-20 and online November 12 – December 8. If you can make it to a make it to an in-person show, come say hello to the man behind the program. You’ll be glad you did.
